PostSubject: LUX-related Douglas DC-8s   Sun Dec 01, 2013 11:47 pm

Perhaps we can start a compilation of pics here showing some DC-8s with a relationship to LUX, either based or visitors. Let's begin with this ex-ALM DC-8-32 seen stored at LUX in 1981. Initially it was intended for United African Airlines but unfortunately was scrapped instead:

The same year showed this Icelandair DC-8-63 on regular service with Air Bahama sticker, being leased from SAS in their basic livery:

In 1983, Icelandair leased this DC-8-55 in basic last Overseas National livery:

To compare: This DC-8-63CF wears the original Icelandair livery, seen here at CGN in 1984 on a diversion from foggy LUX:

In 1984, Air Afrique retired this DC-8-53 seen here being dismantled at LUX and later was used for many years as a pancake restaurant at Purmerend near AMS:

This DC-8-21 of Transport Aerien Centraficain seen here stored in 1979 might look like an ex-Alitalia aircraft although it never served with the italian flag carrier:

In addition to the Cargolux DC-8s shown in the G-AVZZ thread, here are some hybrid liveries on DC-8-63s leased by Cargolux taken far from home at DUS - sorry for that Wink. This one had been around with dozens of operators until recently retired by National, seen here in 1977 in a rudimentary white livery after operating for Overseas National, Austrian and Seaboard World:

Already in 1975, Cargolux leased this sistership from Overseas National in their basic livery:

And finally this one, leased from World Airways in 1978, still showing the lessor's basic paint scheme:

Maybe it would be nice if we can collect some more of these LUX-related jetliners here?

Great pictures Donaldson. Gratulations.
The most part of these planes I can remember very well.

PS for INFO: I'm just working on a new project of 'FINDEL AIRCRAFT BOOK 1984 - 2014', which is possible to be published later in 2014 (without guaranty because its too expensive with NO sponsorship). Need a lot of time for scanning the most interesting slides and photos from that period of time. Several are unfortunately of minor quality as I tried at the beginning a lot of different sorts and types of films...!

Ciao and thanks a lot.

Thanks for your comments! Your project sounds very interesting, and I keep my fingers crossed. BTW, there could be some more motifs for this thread then?

That problem I know only too well, finally coming to Kodachrome after trying some other films for some years...

Some great shots there!

Here are some picturescans of DC-8 TU-TCB (your 5th picture), but now as an italian restaurant in Purmerend on 22 july 1993. Peter and I did a railway tour in the Netherlands for a few days then. This DC-8 was later totally destroyed by fire.

Hi, here are a few more pictures taken some years ago:

TF-FLE was nicely parked next to the visitors-terrace

A view on the cargo apron in summer 2001

Zairean carrier  Sicotra Aviation in front of the Luxair freight shed

LX-DCV with minimal paint on the fuselage

LUX in 2003

And in 2003 again

In Summer 1978, Cargolux leased N797FT fron Flying Tigers

The passenger side of LUX in 1987

An ex National DC-8 was parked for a long time  next to the Luxair hangar

Two ex Air Canada DC-8-61 with a 707, probably Luxair

And the last one for today, the famous N8630 of Air Bahama

Great diddi. Just GREAT...! Thanks for sharing. Wonderful retro pictures.
PS: I think the DC.8-63 TF-FLE was the ex: 8P-PLC Caribbean AW and got later N7043U of National Air Cargo (Zambia) + Arrow Air....?

Serge,
I don`t think so. TF-FLE was ex N8630 and ended with UPS as N801UP (c/n 46101). According to rzjets.net 8P-PLC was re-registered TF-FLE, but not used by Icelandair. 8P-PLC was stored at LUS for some time, too but very difficult to photograph.

I think there had been two DC.8-63 with TF-FLE Registration. (cn 46101 and 46042). The first one was 78-80 with Air Bahama (Icelandair) and the second one 87-89 with Icelandair and later Arrow Air (NAC).

Serge,  these TF-regs are like Pandora`s box! IŽll try to check it. That there were 2 TF-TLEs is without question. Like TF-FLC, there were two different planes as well.
Anyway, here`s 8P-PLC parked at LUX:

Thank you all very much for these fantastic pics! I have to admit, unfortunately I have never been to Purmerend (although I very often intended to do so) and now the chance has gone.

Also thanks to Heron for the clarification. As you can see on Diddi's TF-FLE from 1987, this is the pure pax DC-8-63 only without cargo door. And here is the other TF-FLE, the convertible freighter DC-8-63CF with visible cargo door, seen at DUS in 1979 wearing Air Bahama's latest livery:
